Barfly in Gramercy is not a dive bar. Near the front windows, there's an elevated bar / perch from which you can drink and watch the rest of the patrons...drink.             CLICK TO ENLARGE

Canal & Broadway [NW Corner] (October 18, 2012)

This might be my favorite corner in New York City. The abundance of graffiti on almost every surface. The variety of elevations. The dilapidated perfume store. A hectic mess. Below is an up-close shot, taken by famous photographer Terry Richardson.                   CLICK TO ENLARGE

Houston & Ave C [NW Corner] (December 30, 2012)

According to EV Grieve, the Mobil gas station at the corner of Houston Street and Avenue C (Loisaida) was sold to a brokerage firm last year for $8 million. That will leave just one remaining gas station in the East Village (the BP at Second Avenue and East First Street). EV Grieve says, "with the unused air rights, gas stations are just too valuable on such prime real estate in Manhattan."

Bleecker St & MacDougal St (1963)

I don't recall where I found this picture of 1960s Greenwich Village. There's litter on the street in front of Cafe Figaro, which closed in 2008, after 5 decades in business. According to a NY Times article, "Among the customers over the years, lingering over their coffee cups for hours on end, were Bob DylanLenny Bruce and Jack Kerouac."                  CLICK TO ENLARGE

Graffiti Truck (Kips Bay) (January 30, 2013)

What does it say? Another graffiti-covered box truck. This time, it's in Kips Bay ("KipsMurCy") in front of the what used to be L'Annam Vietnamese restaurant at 28th Street & 3rd Avenue. A Starbucks recently replaced the restaurant.              CLICK TO ENLARGE

3rd & Ave C [SE Corner] (October 20, 2012)

Maria's Cafe in the East Village apparently serves a mean Cafe Con Leche...with Bustelo Coffee! And the empanadas are said to be good (and cheap). One Yelper said, "Moving closer to this place was one of the greatest things that could've happened to me."             CLICK TO ENLARGE
